Twelve dedicated fundraisers took on the Helvellyn Sunrise Charity Challenge on Sunday 27 September, raising an incredible £2,070 for the Great Start in Life Foundation.
Setting off from Swirls Car Park at 4am, the group began their adventure in complete darkness. Supported by the experienced team at Sky Blue Adventures, they climbed one of the Lake District’s most iconic mountains by head torch, determined to reach the summit before sunrise.

Despite the challenging conditions, every participant reached the top of Helvellyn. As the sun rose over the surrounding fells, the team enjoyed stunning views across Striding Edge and the wider Lake District. The spectacular sunrise rewarded everyone for their early start and effort.
The challenge brought together colleagues, friends and supporters who shared a commitment to improving outcomes for children, young people and families across our communities.
Team Cumberland Leads the Way
Representing Cumberland Building Society, Team Cumberland included Emma, Adam, Louise, Judith, Hoa, Claire, Kathryn and Ali.

They were joined by Clare from HDFT Cardiology and Eve from South Tyneside 0-19 Services, who completed the challenge alongside her husband, Dave.

Together, the group showed remarkable determination, teamwork and resilience throughout the climb.
Raising Vital Funds for Local Children and Families
As well as reaching the summit, the team achieved an impressive fundraising total.
Together, they raised £2,070 for the Great Start in Life Foundation, which is part of Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity. The Foundation supports projects that enhance care and provide additional opportunities for children, young people and families.
The funds raised through challenges like this help deliver support beyond core NHS provision. Subsequently, local families can benefit from projects and initiatives designed to give every child the best possible start in life.
One participant said:
“Watching the sun rise over the Lake District after a challenging climb was an unforgettable experience. Knowing we were raising funds to support children, young people and families made it even more rewarding.”

More Than a Mountain Challenge
From the first steps taken in darkness to the celebrations at the summit, the challenge demonstrated the power of community fundraising.
Every participant contributed to the success of the event through their enthusiasm, commitment and support for the cause. Their efforts will help make a meaningful difference to children, young people and families across our region.
A huge congratulations and thank you to everyone who took part.
