Gwen Singleton was brought to Harrogate Hospital on the night of 28th June – her health had deteriorated rapidly after it was discovered she had lung cancer. She never left the hospital again and died on the Wensleydale Ward on 31st July.
The extraordinary care, respect and support the doctors, nurses and all the staff granted Gwen and her family & friends who came to see her during these weeks will never be forgotten.
As well as looking after Gwen they were a huge support to her only daughter Laura who was in the hospital every day and most nights too, they always supported her with hugs, tea and compassion. Each time we were at the hospital there was always someone who would not only tell us how Gwen was doing but would gently ask how we were coping; explaining that any one of us could talk to any of the staff at any time – they were always there to help.
Gwennie loved life; she was adventurous, determined and bold. As a researcher at Yorkshire TV for three decades she knew the world, and how some things work and somethings don’t – very early on we all agreed this was a good hospital – it worked: It was safe; clean and comprehensively caring. There is no more fitting tribute to Gwen than supporting the hospital if you can as it helps others in turn.
What greater gift can those in the NHS give? How much more can we expect from them? The family and friends of Gwen Singleton are forever grateful to Harrogate Hospital and the Wensleydale Ward.
